Hervor said:

16. “Such nightly blaze ye cannot build
that of their fires afraid I grow:
will Hervor’s heart not be horror-struck,
e’en though a ghost in grave-door stood.15

Angantýr said:

17. "I tell thee, Hervor— heed my warning!—
what will happen, thou heroes’ daughter!
I say but sooth: will this sword become
the slayer of all thy sib and kin.”

18. “Thou ’lt have a son who hereafter
will wield Tyrfing and trust his strength;
Heithrek16 will he be hight of men,
and mightiest grow of men under heaven.

Hervor said:

19. “Thus shall I deal with you dead men’s bones
that in your graves ye get no rest:17
out of howe hand me the hater-of-byrnies,18
the dwarfs’ handiwork: ’t will not do to hide it!”19

Angantýr said:20

20. “Hardly human I hold thee, maiden,
about barrows who hoverest at night,
with graven spear21 and Gothic iron,22
with helmet and byrnie, the hall’s18 gate before,

[15. This was originally Hollander's stanza 8.

16. Cf. The Lay of Hloth and Angantýr, Prose, and note.

17. In the original, “that ye shall lie dead with spooks,” which makes little sense. The stanza is imperfectly transmitted—with an excrescent long-line—and the translation therefore only an approximation.

18. Kenning for “sword,”

19. Stanza was conformed from Hollander's stanza 21 lines 1-2 and Hollander's stanza 17 lines 3-4 to match the ON.

20. This was orignially Hollander's stanza 16.

21. I.e., with a spear in whose iron figures, or characters, (of silver) were inlaid.

22. Indefinite kenning for “sword” or “armor.”]

Hervör kvað:

16. "Brennið eigi svá bál á nóttum,
at ek við elda yðra hræðumk;
skelfr-at meyju muntún hugar,
þótt hon draug sjái i durum standa."

Angantýr kvað:

17. "Segi ek þér, Hervör, - hlýð þú til enn,
vísa dóttir, - þat er verða mun:
sjá mun Tyrfingr, ef þú trúa mættir,
ætt þinni, mær, allri spilla.

18. Muntu son geta, þann er síðan mun
Tyrfing bera ok trúa magni;
þann munu Heiðrek heita lýðar,
sá mun ríkstr alinn und röðuls tjaldi."

Hervör kvað:

19. "Ek vígi svá virða dauða,
at ér skuluð allir liggja
dauðir með draugum í dys fúnir;
sel mér, Angantýr, út ór haugi
dverga smíði; dugir-a þér at leyna."

Angantýr kvað:

20. "Kveðk-at þik, mær ung, mönnum líka,
er þú um hauga hvarfar á nóttum
gröfnum geiri ok með Gota málmi,
hjálmi ok með brynju fyrir hallar dyrr."
